Enlisted Apr 12,1862 at age of 26. Brother George W was in 29th NC Inf. Captured at Kolb's Farm near Marietta Ga. on June 22 1864. Sent to Nashville Tenn and then transfered to Louisville,Ky. July 13.1864. From there he was transfered to Camp Morton, Indianapolis,Ind. Paroled and shipped to City Point on James River Virginia March 4,1865.6 days after his brother George died on prisoner exchange at City Point.

Fidilio Ratcliff

With his brother William Franklin, Fidelio enlisted as a private at age 22 at Asheville, North Carolina on 17 May 1862 and was mustered in at Camp Smith 1 August 1862 for the duration of the war in Co. “E” (Buncombe Farmers) 60th N.C. Infantry C.S.A. It was noted that he was 5 feet 10 inches tall. The records of November and December 1862 stated the he “never reported” and for January and February 1863 that he was absent sick. For March and April he seems to have been present for it was noted that he “Went home on furlough never rejoined, dropped from the roll. Deserted 1 Aug. 62” yet he was paid $11 per month from 17 May to 1 August 1862. From June 30 to October 31 he was “absent, sick at home- reports monthly”, November and December 1863 he was absent, at home sick, and January and February was absent, “out on leave- Furloughed- Quit reporting but by March 1864 he “Has all his pay due & Confederate & State bounty.” For the May and June report 1864 he was “Absent, Sick sent Hospt 3 July 64 [by] Dr. Griffin”, transferred to Ocmulgee Hospital in Macon, Georgia on 5 July then to General Hospital 8 July 1864 and died 25 August 1864 at General Hospital number 2 at Eufala, Alabama. On 29 June 1865, his widow Harriett Israel Ratcliff married Andrew Jackson Hawkins. He was born 6 January 1837 and died 12 August 1902, Harriett died in 1917.

William Franklin Ratcliff

William Franklin Ratcliff was born July 19, 1829 in Leicester, N.C. He died 22 June 1864 and is believed to be a twin to Celina. He married Mary Lucinda Embler, born in 1834 died 31 August 1916. They had four children. William Franklin enlisted 17 May 1862 at age 34 and was mustered in at Camp Smith 1 August 1862 as a private in Company “E” 60th North Carolina Infantry C.S.A. The record states he was 5 feet 11 inches tall. In his brother Marion Isaac’s letter of 9 November 1861, he is mentioned with him in Raleigh, North Carolina. From 26 June to 2 August 1863, William “was on detached service as a wagoner from Stovall’s Brigade with the supply train under General Johnston at Camp Hurricane Mississippi”. From 1 to 18 August 1863 he served as a teamster and his name appears on the list of noncommissioned officers and privates employed on extra duty at O.M. Department. He was killed in action at Marietta, Georgia on 22 June 1864, buried at the Confederate Cemetery, Marietta, Georgia. His widow later married the millwright R. Frank Boyd born in South Carolina in 1842. William F and Mary had four children: Hilary Montraville, Minervy Evaline, Sarah Jane, and Mary Lucinda Ratcliff.

Celina “Lina” E. Ratcliff born 19 July 1829 in Leicester and died 13 March 1922, she is buried at Sluder Cemetery in Buncombe County. She married Mitchell Sluder born 1825 at Dix Creek, Buncombe County, North Carolina. Mitchell enlisted in Company “E” 60th N. C. Infantry C.S.A. on 1 August 1862 and died in 1863 at Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
